The Maasai Culture has fascinated many. Ironically however,
this unique way of life has also created much concern because
of the practice of early girl marriage.
The friends of Sironka dance troupe, a fundraising entity
of Enkishon Nataana has since the year 2001, championed efforts
to eradicate the appalling practice of girl circumcision or Female
genital mutilation. This is a retrogressive practice that leads
to early child marriage.
The School Program
A four-year high school program in Kenya allows for the physical
and mental maturity of the sponsored girls, and makes circumcision
and unwanted marriage inapplicable by the time the girls graduate
from high school.
High school education sponsorships have greatly helped many young
girls escape circumcision and early and unwanted marriage.
Every girl sponsored to school plants a tree each school
year (at home) in honor of her sponsor.
Sironka continues to work towards having more Maasai girls
sponsored under a high school girls sponsorship program which he
began in the year 2002.

ON UNIVERSITY EDUCATION, Sironka says:
“As a Maasai, I feel that many of our people have lagged
behind economically, because for lack of being educated. This
is at both high school and at University level.
I do not dispute the fact that many Maasai men and women have
gone to University, but the numbers that have, are relatively
low in comparison to other communities in Kenya.
Hence I have for the past five years embarked on a University
scholarship fund aimed at ensuring that a greater number of
Maasai students get University education”. |
